Two days and two sweeps and the Presidents Cup is all square heading into Saturday. The competition’s third day will feature four four-ball games in the morning followed by four foursomes matches in the afternoon.
Things get underway early, with the first ball in the air at 7:02 a.m. Here’s a look at Saturday morning’s battles.
Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa (U.S.)
Adam Scott and Taylor Pendrith (International)
Jim Furyk knows his team needs to bounce back Saturday morning and he’s leaning on two huge guns, Scheffler and Morikawa, to put a point on the board early.
Mike Weir has responded with Scott and Pendrith, who cruised to a 5&4 victory over Morikawa and Sahith Theegala on Friday.
“(Scott is) obviously a legend in this event … he’s played so many,†Pendrith said Wednesday. “And you see how badly he wants it, he wants to win. He’s very motivating. When he speaks, people listen. You see how badly he wants to win and beat the Americans.â€
Obviously Scott and Pendrith made for a great partnership but they’re in tough in this one. Scheffler wasn’t happy to lose Friday.
Pick: Scheffler and Morikawa
Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele (U.S.)
Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes (International)
To nobody’s surprise, Conners and Hughes are right back out again Saturday morning after their 6&5 win Friday over Finau and Wyndham Clark. They’ll see Finau again, but this time with Xander Schauffele.
Conners and Hughes couldn’t be any more confident after their seven-birdie performance in foursomes and they’ll have the crowds — if folks get to Royal Montreal early enough — firmly in their corner again.
This match should come down to the wire.
Pick: Conners and Hughes
Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clark (U.S.)
Si Woo Kim and Tom Kim (International)
Tom Kim proved to be a terrific cheerleader Friday, sitting out in what seemed a strange decision by Weir and his assistants after the 22-year-old was the most animated of the International players Thursday.
He’ll pair with Si Woo Kim, who hit a dart to two feet on the par-3 13th hole Friday to send Tom Kim into hysterics. And they’ll face the most supercharged American in Bradley, who sat Friday after teaming with Clark for a win Thursday.
This could be the most exciting match given the player’s theatrics.Â
Pick: Tie
Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns (U.S.)
Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im (International)
The last match out features the men who paired for the most lopsided victory in Presidents Cup history. Matsuyama and Im were stupendous on Friday, making a mind-boggling seven straight birdies in alternate shot to beat Cantlay and Schauffele 7&6.
Cantlay, looking for revenge, will join Burns in what might be the weakest of the American teams in this session.
Pick: Matsuyama and Im
